Flickr's new "Places" section

Firenze on Flickr's Places
I don't know how "new" flickr's Places section is, but yesterday it was new to me.

The Places project is our way of saying thank you to all our members who’ve taken the time to put their gorgeous photos on a map. Browse the whole globe, from your hometown to your favorite place, or places you’ve never even heard of...

So go ahead, start exploring... Zambia, London, Jackson Hole, or even just Wyoming.

It's a pretty awesome little portal, and gets us one step closer to Tim O'Reilly's proposition:

Imagine wandering through the streets of Paris on a virtual site generated from thousands of images of Paris posted on the internet from different people! [Via]

IMAGINE! </sarcasm>

If you could mash this together with Google's Street View, I think we're almost there!

UPDATE: Turns out it's pretty new (flickr blog announcement, 11/20/2007).

day 1 of dog365. high 80s here, and lola is definitely not used to the heat.

i've been doing a somewhat inconsistent version of 365 days at flickr, and josh & madison just started their version: dog365. so, here we go! i may actually try to blog these -- since lola is much cuter than me. y'all will just have to visit flickr to look at my mug.

Life List #52 -- shave my head

OK, not really. I don't really have a numbered list. But I have always wanted to have the cajones to take the ol' razor to the ol' head. Turns out all I needed was a little peer pressure -- or at least a little brother pressure. Not that he pressured me. It was just too fun to shave his head and I was jealous!

iPhone photos

ok, this is the last iPhone entry. at least for a while.

just found these hump-worthy photos from Niall Kennedy (a bay area tech geek). he recently blogged about "The end of Apple Computer." get it? they changed their name to Apple, Inc...

i'm hoping to make it to the exhibition hall tomorrow. i've got my fingers crossed for that "one more thing..."

and in case you just can't wait until june, fool your friends!

Happy New Year

Just found this photo from Amit Gupta on Flickr by way of HorsePigCow (a great addition to anyone's blogroll, by the way). Despite living in NYC (or probably because I lived there) for several years, I never went anywhere near Times Square on New Year's Eve. However, this photo captures the essence of what I hope it would feel like.

Some resolutions/goals for 2OO7:
  1. do something community-based -- a class, ballroom dancing, etc.
  2. get preggers
  3. finally go on a "real" honeymoon -- i.e. a 2-week vacation where i don't check email or do any work
  4. take more photos -- one a day is too ambitious, but one nice long session a week sounds good
  5. eradicate "like" and "awesome" from my vocabulary
  6. exercise regularly; lose 10-15 pounds (may not be compatible w/ #2)
  7. ski 15-20 days this winter
  8. ski utah this winter
  9. get my hair cut every 6-8 weeks
  10. keep in touch with friends -- something that i'm not good at, despite being online 8-12 hours a day. however, twitter is already helping with this one. those of you who have ignored my invitations, be damned! ;)

Coming soon...the requisite "best of 2006" list.

photowalking in the mission

mission mural + pedestrians
mission mural + pedestrians, originally uploaded by hlh-abg.

i did a nice long photowalk through the mission district yesterday. the standouts are online at flickr.

some of the photos came out pretty well, but it's mostly due to the subject. it was a cloud-covered nothing of a day, but the mission is always so alive and vibrant.

i strolled around listening to some newly downloaded tunes and tried to take as many shots as possible. maybe a third were worth a second glance, and maybe a quarter of them ended up on flickr. not bad. if you visit flickr and are inclined to comment, i always appreciate the feedback.

happy new year. more about my resolutions soon, but one of them is to take more pictures!

lesson #1 = the rule of thirds.
lesson #2 = dramatic clouds rule.

i've been looking at lots of corn-related photos (don't ask), and this one actually made me smile and exclaim, "Nice."

yes, that's a project runway reference, in case your wife isn't suckered into it, which by proxy means that you know every stinkin' detail, including that jeffrey won last night.

whew. sometimes run-on sentences make blogging a lot of fun.

Zooomr Pro Accounts for FREE

Zooomr (think "flickr delta" -- get it, instead of gamma? oh boy.) is giving away free Pro accounts to any blogger who hosts an image for their blog through Zooomr. Sounds like a great way to start experimenting with this site!

So, here is my dear dog doing what she does best (and most):

flickr no longer in beta

flickr logoflickr has moved out of beta and into... gamma! pretty cool for them to acknowledge that it's still a work in progress, a web app that can only get better. i predict others will follow suit, to be trendy. though google may be stubborn and keep everything in beta... forever! ;)

anyway, other than the new gamma logo, the changes are very cool, too. the new "organizr" is my favorite upgrade, very useful stuff.
